Meaning
Standardized operational framework within Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) that allows communication in extremely poor radio conditions through deep coverage enhancement. Under 3GPP Release 13 CE Mode B, a device uses up to 2048 repetitions of a transmission to be heard through heavy obstacles or long distances. This configuration applies when the coupling loss between the base station and the transceiver exceeds 154 decibels, extending beyond the limits of CE Mode A, and it defines the absolute limit of sub-surface connectivity.
Signal Repetition
Radio bursts repeated up to thousands of times enable the receiver to integrate the signal energy and reconstruct the payload. Base stations combine these transmissions to resolve the data, which reduces the effective throughput to a few hundred bits per second.
Battery Impact
Prolonged active transmission periods alter the power profile of the integrated device. High current draw over several seconds depletes the energy reservoir of the battery if the cell is not rated for continuous high pulse discharge. Engineers must calculate the voltage drop under this prolonged load to prevent premature module reset.
Module Qualification
Thermal verification of the device enclosure ensures the transceiver maintains a safe operating temperature during long transmission cycles. Engineers record the surface temperature of the shielding during a simulated repetition cycle to qualify the physical assembly for commercial deployment.
