Meaning
Thermodynamic thresholds determine the maximum permissible moisture concentration in compressed gases supplied to precision pneumatic supports. For stage systems using porous or orifice pads, air bearing pressure dew point defines the temperature at which water vapor begins to condense within the pressurized supply lines. Condensation within the bearing gap leads to localized corrosion and erratic flying height.
This parameter is specified at the operating pressure of the manifold to prevent liquid water formation at the expansion nozzles.
Condensation Risk
Expansion of compressed air through small nozzles causes a localized temperature drop. If the compressed air is close to its saturation limit, the drop triggers immediate moisture precipitation. Liquid droplets disrupt the thin fluid film of the bearing and cause mechanical contact between the pad and the guide surface.
Filtration Requirement
Dryers of the desiccant or membrane type are installed upstream of the distribution manifold to lower the dew point to acceptable levels. The filtration assembly removes aerosols and particulates. This protects the porous material from clogging.
Operational Monitoring
Continuous tracking of the gas dry bulb temperature and moisture level prevents unexpected failures. A dedicated hygrometer placed after the secondary regulator provides early warning of dryer saturation. The control system triggers an emergency stop if the measured value exceeds the safe threshold.
