Meaning
Statistical quality control procedures define the sample size and acceptance criteria for evaluating a production lot. An aql sampling plan establishes the rules for testing a representative subset of a batch to verify component integrity. It determines how many units to draw from a shipment and what number of failed parts will trigger a rejection.
Inspection Protocol
Standardised tables provide the sample size code letters based on lot size and the selected inspection level. When a shipment of wireless modules arrives, the receiver uses these tables to pull a random selection for functional checkouts. This step prevents the installation of faulty transceivers before board-level integration begins.
Risk Balance
The buyer and the supplier agree on the maximum allowable percentage of non-conforming items. Higher inspection levels reduce the chance of accepting bad batches but require more bench hours. Manufacturers often balance these costs by using tighter limits for critical RF components than for plastic housing parts.
Mathematical relationships between producer and consumer risks are illustrated by the operating characteristic curve, which shows the probability of acceptance at varying defect rates. This visual tool helps engineers choose an appropriate level of scrutiny for sensitive radio chips.
Acceptance Threshold
Testing results lead to a binary pass or fail decision for the entire batch. If the number of failed devices sits at or below the acceptance number, the batch enters inventory. When failures reach the rejection number, the entire lot is returned to the supplier for sorting.
