Meaning
A European harmonized standard defines electromagnetic compatibility requirements for short-range radio devices operating on frequencies between 9 kHz and 40 GHz. Compliance with ETSI EN 301 489-3 ensures that wireless modules do not emit excessive electromagnetic interference and remain immune to external disturbances. It is a mandatory part of the CE marking process for many smart devices.
Testing Environment
Laboratory evaluations are conducted in specialized semi-anechoic chambers to measure both radiated and conducted emissions. To pass ETSI EN 301 489-3, the device under test must operate without degradation during exposure to RF electromagnetic fields and electrostatic discharges. These tests simulate the typical electromagnetic stress a product will encounter in residential and commercial environments.
Product Integration
System designers must incorporate shielding and filtering at the board level to meet these limits before submitting the finished product for certification. A common challenge involves noise generated by high-speed digital buses or switching power supplies, which can leak through the enclosure and cause a test failure. The test report generated by the accredited laboratory serves as the primary technical file that allows the manufacturer to sign the declaration of conformity.
This report must be retained for at least ten years after the product is placed on the market.
Certification Strategy
Regulatory approval is simplified by using pre-certified wireless sub-assemblies in the product. This approach reduces the risk of expensive failures during the final compliance testing phase, saving development time and resources.
