Meaning
Performance metric calculating the percentage of data packets that require retransmission because of failure in the initial delivery. The frame retry rate provides an objective measure of the stability and congestion level of a wireless network segment. It identifies how often the physical layer or medium access control layer must repeat a transmission because a confirmation was not received.
A high value indicates environmental interference, excessive distance or physical obstacles that block the signal.
Contention Management
Contention management involves monitoring the frequency of retransmissions to detect hidden nodes or overlapping networks. When the frame retry rate spikes, it often suggests that multiple devices are attempting to talk at the same time on the same channel. The system responds by increasing the back-off time or reducing the data rate to ensure the next attempt succeeds.
This process involves the clear channel assessment mechanism which pauses new transmissions until the medium is free.
Energy Consumption
Battery life decreases as the number of transmission attempts for a single packet grows. Every time the hardware triggers a frame retry rate event, the radio remains in an active state longer than necessary for a clean link. This additional power draw is a major concern for low-power sensors and battery-operated mobile devices.
Latency Consequence
Application delay increases when the network layer must wait for multiple retransmission cycles to complete. A high frame retry rate adds jitter to voice and video streams because the timing of packet arrival becomes unpredictable. Users experience this as stuttering or temporary pauses in the data stream.
