Meaning
A short-range communication standard defines the transmission protocols and physical interface requirements for contactless integrated circuit cards operating at thirteen point five six megahertz. Implementing ISO/IEC 14443 NFC ensures that smart badges, payment terminals and mobile devices can exchange structured data within a close-proximity range of less than ten centimeters. This boundary prevents the interception of sensitive wireless transactions by remote third parties.
The standard is divided into four distinct parts covering physical characteristics, radio frequency power, bit collision detection, and transmission protocol architectures.
Physical Interface
Radio signals use amplitude shift keying to transmit data between the reader and the transponder. Devices using ISO/IEC 14443 NFC rely on the magnetic field generated by the reader to power the passive target chip. This design allows for battery-less tags to be embedded in small plastic cards.
Data Rate
Transmission speeds vary from one hundred and six to eight hundred and forty-eight kilobits per second. Under the ISO/IEC 14443 NFC standard, frame boundaries and collision detection protocols are managed automatically during the initial handshake. This enables rapid multi-card resolution in a busy field.
Antenna Coupling
Inductive loop antenna design must be matched to the input capacitance of the transceiver chip. When integrating ISO/IEC 14443 NFC into a compact metallic enclosure, engineers must use ferrite isolation sheets to prevent the metal from detuning the antenna. This isolation maintains reliable communication distances.
