Meaning
Data routing architecture that allows traffic to exit the mobile network at a gateway near the user location. Implementing local breakout reduces the distance data must travel compared to the traditional home routed model. This setup is common in internet of things deployments where low latency is required for real time applications.
It does not apply to voice services which are typically routed through the home subscriber server for authentication and billing.
Gateway Selection
The network identifies the nearest packet data network gateway to handle the user session. By exiting the carrier backbone early, the data avoids the congestion of the international transit links. This regional approach simplifies the network path and improves the speed of the connection.
Path Optimization
Shortening the route between the device and the application server minimizes the number of hops and the potential for packet loss. In a local breakout configuration, the round trip time is significantly reduced. This is particularly beneficial for industrial automation and remote monitoring systems.
Policy Enforcement
Local breakout requires the visited network to handle charging and policy rules in coordination with the home network. These mechanisms ensure that traffic follows the roaming agreement while maintaining high performance. The architecture allows for flexible data handling based on the specific needs of the device.
