Meaning
Specialized electromagnetic test environment that uses moving metal paddles to create a statistically uniform field. Mode-stirred chamber testing provides an alternative to anechoic chambers for measuring total radiated power and electromagnetic immunity. It relies on the reflection of waves off the walls to generate a high density of signal paths.
The method is particularly effective for testing large or complex hardware that does not fit easily in standard anechoic setups.
Field Uniformity
Rotating the stirrers changes the boundary conditions inside the enclosure which causes the standing wave patterns to shift. A mode-stirred chamber achieves a stable average field strength over a full rotation, allowing for the measurement of the total energy emitted by a device regardless of its orientation. This statistical approach removes the need for precise mechanical alignment of the product under test.
Measurement Speed
This environment allows for faster characterization of complex devices compared to traditional point by point scanning. Because the mode-stirred chamber captures the total energy in the volume, it is particularly useful for testing products with multiple antennas or complicated radiation patterns.
Test Volume
Size of the chamber determines the lowest frequency at which it can operate effectively. Larger paddles and bigger enclosures are required to maintain a uniform field at lower frequencies where the wavelengths are longer.
