Meaning
Regulatory provision in the United States Code of Federal Regulations defines the criteria for modular transmitter approval. Following section 15.212 allows a manufacturer to certify a component once and sell it to various customers for use in different products. The rules specify that a module must have its own radio frequency shielding.
Technical Threshold
Eight distinct conditions are listed to ensure the module can operate independently of the host. Under section 15.212, the device must have buffered modulation inputs to prevent over-modulation from host data errors. It also requires a permanent antenna or a unique coupler to prevent the use of unapproved antennas.
Grant Type
If a module cannot meet all eight requirements, it may be issued a limited modular approval. This restriction under section 15.212 means the module can only be used in specific hosts where the manufacturer maintains control over the final installation. It ensures safety in all configurations.
Application Scope
Clear instructions must be provided to the integrator regarding the visible markings on the final product. Because the module is hidden inside the host, section 15.212 mandates that the host exterior displays the FCC ID of the module. This allows regulators to identify the transmitter without opening the device.
The integration manual must also contain the specific phrasing required by the commission to warn users about potential interference. If the antenna is placed within twenty centimeters of a person, the manual must include the necessary exposure warnings as defined by the safety standards.
