Meaning
Mechanical fixtures secure the moving components of a precision instrument during transport or handling. Before moving a metrology system, transport locking brackets are installed to rigidize the axes and protect the bearings and optical encoders from shock and vibration. These fixtures bypass the motion mechanism and distribute the forces directly to the machine frame.
This prevents damage to the stage, ensuring that the instrument remains in its calibrated state after being transported to a new location.
Mechanical Isolation
The fixtures prevent the stage from sliding along its rails, which could damage the motor or the encoder scale. They are painted with a distinct color to ensure they are removed before power is applied. This prevents damage to the drive system.
Installation Routine
Installation occurs before the system is packed. The axes are moved to a specific position, and the brackets are secured with fasteners. Once the system arrives at its destination, the brackets are removed.
This step is completed before the system is turned on.
Risk Prevention
Leaving the brackets installed when power is applied can cause the motors to overheat. If the brackets are not installed during transit, the stage can move freely. This can cause high-impact damage to the guide rails and bearings.
