Meaning
A binary signaling method represents digital data by shifting the carrier frequency between two discrete values on either side of the nominal center frequency. This digital transmission scheme, known as 2 gfsk modulation, passes the incoming binary stream through a Gaussian filter prior to modulation. Pre-filtering reduces the sidelobes.
The signal occupies less spectrum, which allows closer spacing between operating channels in sub-gigahertz bands.
Frequency Deviation
The separation between the binary zero and binary one frequencies determines the transmission bandwidth and the signal robustness. A higher value of frequency deviation in 2 gfsk modulation provides stronger immunity to noise but requires wider channel spacing. Transceiver modules must balance this trade off to maintain the packet error rate.
Gaussian Filtering
A pulse shaping filter smooths the transitions of the digital stream before it modulates the voltage controlled oscillator. In 2 gfsk modulation, this pre-filtering stage suppresses high frequency components that would otherwise spill into neighboring channels. The filter parameter is configured during the firmware development stage to meet regulatory limits.
Hardware Selection
Low cost transceivers that integrate this modulation scheme must have a stable frequency reference. The reference oscillator is selected to maintain the modulation accuracy across the specified operating temperature range. Such care avoids frequency drift that degrades performance.
