Meaning
Signaling procedures in cellular communication establish a logical routing path between a user equipment and a packet data network. Through apn context activation, the user equipment registers its intent to transmit packet data and receives an assigned IP address from the gateway. This transaction defines the quality of service profiles and security associations for the session.
Establishment Procedure
Mobile terminals trigger the packet session by transmitting an activation request to the mobility management entity. The network validates the requested access point name against subscriber database entries to determine routing authorization. Once verified, the gateway allocates a dedicated user plane tunnel and confirms the allocation back to the terminal.
This completes the data path setup.
Session Boundary
Data transmission only continues while the network maintains the logical channel. Inactivity timers or explicit detach requests terminate the active session. If the connection drops without a detach sequence, the network eventually tears down the context to reclaim resources.
Allocation Failure
Incorrect access parameters or expired subscriptions block the logical routing path. When the activation request fails, the terminal must pause before retry attempts to avoid network congestion. This delay prevents continuous signaling loops from overloading the mobility management entity.
