Meaning
A binary encoding format designed for low memory and low bandwidth machine-to-machine communication in constrained sensor networks. In IoT systems, CBOR data serialization converts complex data structures into compact byte streams without losing type information. It does not apply to high-performance applications where data must be stored in uncompressed raw formats for real-time visualization.
Encoding Efficiency
Compact representation reduces the packet size transmitted over low power wide area networks. In CBOR data serialization, integer values and common types are encoded in single byte prefixes to minimize overhead. This optimization allows devices to conserve battery power by reducing transmitter active time.
Memory consumption remains low because the parser does not require a large buffer.
Payload Structure
Data types are identified by a major type indicator in the initial byte. When CBOR data serialization is processed, this header tells the parser how to interpret the remaining bytes.
Protocol Integration
Interoperability ensures that different microcontrollers can exchange structured payloads without pre-shared schema files. Since CBOR data serialization is standardized under RFC 8949, it integrates directly with CoAP networks to allow device registration and sensor reporting. Designers utilize this format in smart grid meters, remote agricultural monitors, and industrial telemetry modules where firmware footprints are limited.
Handover documents for software integration specify the schemas using CDDL to ensure strict compliance between nodes.
