Meaning
A software application or logical entity coordinates the authentication and commission of joining devices to a secure network. The presence of a commissioner allows network administrators to securely provide credentials to untrusted hardware. This process uses secure channels to transmit the master network key and operational parameters.
Onboarding Procedure
Onboarding a new device requires the establishing of a secure commission session using a shared secret. The commissioner acts as the trust anchor during this sequence, verifying that the new hardware is authorized to join the wireless subnet. This interaction occurs over an encrypted link to prevent the leakage of the network passphrase.
The software generates the necessary tokens to grant the new device full member status.
System Configuration
The user interface allows operators to initiate the provisioning sequence through a mobile device or a local border gateway. When the commissioner begins the joiner discovery, it listens for registration requests on designated ports. The tool manages the state machine for multiple joining devices simultaneously, coordinating with the mesh coordinator to update the active network list.
It releases these resources once the device establishes its local connections.
Software Handover
Testing the commissioning interface involves simulating unauthorized joiner attempts to verify the rejection of invalid credentials. Engineers test the commissioner across different physical distances to evaluate the reliability of the provisioning sequence under weak radio signal conditions. The validation report documents the recovery behavior when a session is interrupted midway through the exchange.
This test guarantees that the security envelope of the network is maintained during field deployment.
