Meaning
Statistical index used to monitor the capability of a manufacturing process by comparing its performance against predefined tolerance limits. Systematic cpk tracking allows engineers to determine if a process is centered and whether it produces parts that fall within the required specification range. The calculation relies on the relationship between the process mean and the nearest specification limit, adjusted for the standard deviation of the output.
Process Monitoring
Data collection occurs at specific intervals on the production line to maintain a continuous record of machine performance. By using cpk tracking, a facility can identify when a tool begins to wear or when a material batch varies from the norm. This oversight identifies issues before the number of scrap units increases.
Shift Detection
Analysis of the index over multiple shifts reveals long term trends that single measurements might miss. If the value drops toward 1.0, the process is nearing a state where it will produce defective units that do not meet the quality requirements. A higher value of 1.33 or 1.66 indicates a higher margin of safety for the assembly and suggests that the machinery is operating well within its limits.
Capability Boundary
Application of this metric is restricted to processes that follow a normal distribution of data points. When a process is inherently unstable, the results of the index do not provide an accurate view.
