Meaning
Integrated hardware module manages the transfer of data between system memory and peripheral devices without involving the central processing unit. A direct memory access controller offloads high bandwidth tasks to improve the overall efficiency of a connected system.
Bus Arbitration
Management of the shared communication path requires a logic block to decide which component has control at any given moment. A direct memory access controller requests bus access from the processor and waits for a grant signal before starting a transfer. This prevents data collisions when multiple peripherals try to communicate at the same time.
Data Throughput
Reduction in processor overhead allows the system to handle more complex networking tasks or user interface updates. High speed interfaces like PCIe or ethernet rely on a direct memory access controller to maintain continuous data streams. Without this hardware, the cpu would spend most of its cycles moving bytes instead of executing application code.
Logic Architecture
Internal register sets allow the software to configure the source address, destination address and the total number of bytes to be moved. Once the transfer is initialized, the controller operates independently and generates an interrupt only when the task is finished. This mechanism supports both single block transfers and complex scatter gather operations.
