Meaning
Thermosetting polymers are widely utilized for potting and sealing electronic assemblies to provide mechanical protection and environmental resistance. Standard epoxy resin formulations consist of a base polymer and a hardener that react to form a highly crosslinked network. This crosslinked network exhibits high electrical insulation and excellent chemical resistance.
Thermal Properties
Temperature resistance is a defining characteristic of these materials when used in demanding environments. An epoxy resin can withstand elevated temperatures up to one hundred and fifty degrees Celsius without decomposing or losing its structural strength. This durability ensures that the sealed electronics remain protected during high temperature operation.
It also resists thermal shock during rapid thermal cycling.
Adhesion Quality
Bonding to different substrate materials occurs through polar chemical interactions on the surface. When applied correctly, epoxy resin provides strong adhesion to copper, FR4, and various metals found in circuit board assemblies. This strong bond prevents moisture ingress along the interface of the connector pins.
Viscosity Profile
Flow characteristics dictate the ease of dispensing in production environments. Formulating the material to have a low initial viscosity allows it to flow easily into tight spaces around components. This behavior is critical for achieving a void free potting layer.
