Meaning
Erosion of the flat area surrounding the injection port results from the high-velocity flow of abrasive molten resins. In high-volume production, gate land washing alters the pressure drop across the orifice and changes the filling pattern of the cavity. It leads to dimensional instability and unsightly blemishes on the exterior of a device enclosure.
Fluid Dynamics
High shear rates at the gate convert mechanical energy into heat, which lowers the viscosity of the polymer. This gate land washing becomes more pronounced when glass-filled polycarbonates are used for structural rigidity in antenna housings. The abrasive particles strike the steel surface at an angle, physically displacing metal atoms.
Friction at the interface generates a localized temperature spike that softens the steel substrate.
Tool Life
Hardened tool steels like H13 provide a baseline resistance to the abrasive forces. If gate land washing continues unchecked, the gate diameter increases and the land length shortens. This change results in a loss of process control during the packing phase.
Quality Control
Periodic measurement of the gate diameter identifies when the wear exceeds the allowable engineering tolerance. Molders utilize optical comparators to detect subtle changes in the gate geometry. Replacement of the gate insert restores the original flow characteristics.
