Meaning
Regulatory frameworks establish the conditions under which a radio transmitter can be integrated into host systems without requiring new emission testing. Applying modular approval guidance allows hardware manufacturers to bypass full system certification by adhering to pre-certified module limits and antenna configurations. The documentation defines the shielding, power regulation, and antenna gain requirements that the host device must satisfy.
Compliance Boundary
Unshielded modules or those with integrated antennas that exceed the original reference design gain fall outside the scope of simplified certification. Under these conditions, the host integrator must file for a class two permissive change or undergo full intentional radiator testing. Following the guidance ensures that the integrated assembly maintains compliance with electromagnetic compatibility standards.
Antenna Condition
Approved antenna types and maximum gain values are specified in the original grant of authorization to maintain the validity of the modular certification. If a different antenna type with higher directional gain is required for the application, additional testing is unavoidable. Cable losses between the module and the antenna can sometimes be used to offset a higher antenna gain, but this must be documented carefully in the compliance folder.
Designers often choose pre-approved trace antennas to simplify the layout and eliminate the risk of violating the certification conditions.
Documentation Package
Integrators must compile a technical file that contains the module test reports and the installation instructions provided by the module manufacturer. This file is kept available for regulatory audits to prove that the integration complies with radio frequency exposure limits. The completed documentation package establishes a clear path to market for smart devices without the financial burden of redundant laboratory testing.
