Meaning
Control plane procedures in cellular communications initiate connection establishment and registration through a dedicated uplink message sent by the user equipment to the core network. Transmission of the NAS Attach Request begins the registration of the device with the mobility management entity. This message includes the subscriber identity and the device capability parameters.
Mobile networks require this exchange to authorize the device for packet services. The registration message is formatted within the non-access stratum layer of the protocol stack. It is encapsulated inside an access stratum message to be transported over the radio interface.
Message Content
Information elements contained within the initial transmission convey the identity, capabilities, and security parameters of the terminal. The NAS Attach Request includes either the international mobile subscriber identity or a temporary network identity. It also carries the encryption algorithms supported by the device and the requested access point name.
These parameters are essential for the network to allocate resources and set up session management.
Signaling Sequence
Uplink signaling initiated by the modem triggers a cascade of verification steps across the wireless infrastructure. Once the NAS Attach Request is received by the evolved Node B, the message is forwarded to the mobility management entity over the S1 interface. The core network then initiates subscriber authentication by requesting security vectors from the home subscriber server.
Failure Vector
Rejection messages from the core network indicate a failure to complete the registration process due to credential mismatch or network congestion. When a NAS Attach Request fails, the device receives an attach reject message containing a specific cause value. This cause value dictates whether the device should retry the connection or block the subscriber identity module.
