Meaning
A structured data format specifies the byte-level organization of information carried within the payload of a near field communication message. Defining an NDEF payload schema allows diverse platforms to interpret the transmitted data correctly, whether the target is a text block, a web address or a system command. This formatting rule is used extensively in contactless tags and smart card applications to ensure broad operating system interoperability.
The schema dictates how the record type definition field is formatted and how the payload length is distributed across single or multi-record transmissions.
Data Structure
Byte headers in the record indicate the type and size of the incoming payload. When structuring an NDEF payload schema, the developer must set the type name format field to distinguish between standard and custom schemas. This prevents parser errors when the mobile device reads the tag.
Interoperability Test
System testing verifies that different hand-held readers can decode the same tag information consistently. Adhering to the NDEF payload schema ensures that neither hardware variations nor operating system updates disrupt the extraction of sensor logs or serial numbers. This consistency is vital for industrial maintenance tools.
Application Parsing
Software parsers convert the raw byte array back into human-readable text or executable triggers. If the custom NDEF payload schema is corrupted or lacks proper alignment, the receiver drops the packet without executing the action. This built-in rejection mechanism prevents the injection of malicious buffer payloads.
