Meaning
A network node that functions as the interface between a cellular core network and external packet data networks routes user traffic to the internet. The packet data gateway anchors the IP address of the mobile device and manages its data session as the terminal moves across different base stations. This component forms a central part of the security architecture of cellular IoT systems.
Session Management
The gateway controls the allocation of dynamic IP addresses and enforces quality of service parameters for each active connected module. Inside the packet data gateway, specific data streams are categorized to prioritize signaling or high-throughput telemetry. This classification helps prevent network congestion from interrupting sensor transmissions.
Protocol Translation
Transitioning between the cellular tunneling protocols and standard internet protocols occurs at this network boundary. A packet data gateway converts GPRS tunneling protocol packets into standard IP packets before routing them to cloud servers. This translation occurs at high speeds to keep packet latency low across the system.
It also implements network address translation to shield internal device addresses from external scans.
Performance Boundary
Maximum throughput limits are determined by the processor capacity and the concurrent session limits of the gateway. When the number of active modems exceeds this limit, the gateway drops connections.
