Meaning
Session management parameters stored in cellular network databases define the routing and quality of service for a mobile device’s data connection. The packet data protocol context establishes the logical connection through which a terminal exchanges data with an external packet network. This record contains the temporary IP address assigned to the terminal and the specific routing options for its data flow.
It acts as the primary data session record in the network core.
Parameter Allocation
Network gateways use these session profiles to enforce security and subscription limits. The packet data protocol context includes the access point name that directs the data traffic to the correct external network. It also specifies the quality of service requirements such as maximum bit rates and packet delay budgets.
This ensures that critical devices receive priority when network traffic is heavy.
Activation Sequence
Establishing a data connection requires a negotiation between the terminal and the network. The packet data protocol context is activated when the device requests a connection and is assigned an address. This process allocates network resources for the device.
Session Management
Terminating or modifying an active connection is handled through explicit signaling messages. The packet data protocol context can be updated dynamically if the device moves to a different network node or if the carrier needs to adjust the bandwidth. This dynamic modification allows the network to optimize resources without disconnecting the device.
When the device goes offline, the context is deactivated and the IP address is returned to the pool.
