Meaning
Uplink transmission packet enables a mobile device to initiate communication with a base station before a dedicated traffic channel is assigned. Mobile hardware sends a random access channel burst to request resources or synchronize timing with the network. This packet contains a preamble that allows the receiver to detect the presence of the terminal.
Successful detection leads to the assignment of a temporary identifier for further interaction.
Uplink Timing
Synchronization happens when the base station measures the arrival time of the signal relative to the expected slot boundary. The random access channel burst must arrive within a specific window to be correctly decoded by the infrastructure. Timing advance commands are sent back to the device to adjust subsequent transmissions.
Proper alignment prevents interference with other users in adjacent slots.
Power Ramp
Transmission occurs at increasing power levels if the initial attempt does not receive an acknowledgment. The random access channel burst starts at a calculated power based on the measured downlink path loss. Subsequent bursts use higher gains until the network responds or the retry limit is reached.
Access Contention
Multiple devices may attempt to send signals simultaneously using the same radio resources. Collisions occur when the random access channel burst from two terminals overlaps in time or frequency. Hardware logic handles the retransmission delay.
