Meaning
A specialized protocol designed to compress and fragment network packets enables the transmission of IPv6 traffic over low-power wide-area networks. Applying SCHC allows small IoT transceivers to utilize standard internet protocols without the high overhead of standard headers. This standard establishes a framework that bridges legacy internet architecture with constraint-bound wireless links.
Compression Mechanism
The system relies on a shared database of static rules stored on both the endpoint module and the network gateway. When a packet matches a rule, SCHC replaces the entire header with a short rule identifier that is only a few bits long. This action eliminates the need to transmit redundant fields such as version numbers or static addresses.
Bandwidth Efficiency
Reducing the payload size decreases the time the radio transmitter must remain active during a broadcast cycle. By minimizing this transmit time, SCHC directly increases the battery life of remote cellular sensors. The reduced packet size also reduces the likelihood of packet loss on noisy radio channels.
Field trials confirm that this compression makes UDP communication viable on networks with strict duty cycle limits.
Network Limit
Packet flows that contain highly dynamic headers that do not match the pre-provisioned rules cannot be compressed. In such cases, the full packet must be transmitted, which increases energy consumption.
