Meaning
A display mode for radio frequency measurement instruments retains the peak signal amplitude across multiple sweeps to create a cumulative envelope of signal activity over time. With spectrum analyzer max hold enabled, the processor compares the current amplitude measurement of each frequency bin against the highest value previously recorded. If the new value exceeds the stored data, the internal memory overwrites the entry to maintain the extreme peak.
This process ignores transient dips in power that occur between cycles. It proves ideal for identifying intermittent interference or determining the total bandwidth occupancy of a frequency hopping transmitter.
Integration Utility
Technicians utilize this logic during pre-compliance testing to capture the worst case emission profiles of digital devices. Engineers evaluate the stability of a signal source against specified limit lines while the display accumulates historical maxima. Because the instrument holds the highest excursions, it detects sporadic noise spikes that a standard sweep often misses.
Correct interpretation of these results requires awareness that the update speed depends on the sweep time and the memory depth of the local hardware.
Measurement Boundary
The captured waveform represents a summation of peak power levels rather than a coherent view of a single point in time. Signals that arrive during dead periods between individual sweeps do not register in the resulting trace. The duration of the measurement determines the probability of catching rare events within the frequency range.
Longer acquisition times eventually fill the buffer with noise if no specific signal occupies the band.
Operational Consequence
Thermal management within the host system influences the noise floor of the instrument during long periods of trace accumulation. Consistent drift in the local oscillator alters the peak values gathered if the signal shifts relative to the bin centers. Accurate results demand stable environmental conditions to ensure the accumulated data reflects only the target emission.
Overlapping signal peaks appear as a single wide envelope in this mode regardless of their individual modulation characteristics.
