Meaning
Multilayer construction plans detail the sequence and material composition of the layers within a printed circuit board. A stack-up specification defines how copper foils and core materials are arranged to achieve the desired electrical performance. This document is a requirement for the fabrication house during the production of high-density interconnect boards.
Impedance Control
Precise spacing between the signal layer and the ground plane determines the speed and quality of data transmission. The stack-up specification ensures that high-speed traces for memory or radio signals meet the required fifty-ohm or one-hundred-ohm targets. Variations in layer thickness can lead to signal reflections that cause system errors.
Accurate modeling of the dielectric constant for each layer is necessary to maintain signal integrity across the entire board surface.
Thermal Management
Heat generated by the processor must travel through the board to reach the cooling structure or the casing. Including thick copper planes in the stack-up specification improves the lateral heat spreading across the device. The design reduces the risk of hot spots that could degrade the lifespan of sensitive components.
Layer Symmetry
Balancing the distribution of copper and dielectric materials prevents the board from warping during the high-temperature soldering process. An asymmetrical stack-up specification causes mechanical stress that can break the small solder joints on microchips. Proper design leads to a flat and reliable assembly.
