Meaning
Elastic bending of the probe needle occurs when the measurement tip makes physical contact with the surface of a workpiece.
Contact Physics
Force applied by the probe trigger mechanism causes the stylus to flex slightly before the measurement point is recorded. The stylus deflection depends on the length and diameter of the stylus stem and the material properties of the shaft. Longer or thinner styli exhibit more bending than short, thick ones.
Correction Logic
Software calculates the expected amount of flex based on the contact force and the known stiffness of the probe assembly. This correction logic for stylus deflection is applied to each measured point to find the true contact position by accounting for the displacement of the probe head. The machine must be qualified using a certified sphere to determine the effective diameter of the stylus tip under operational forces before the measurement routine begins.
Measurement Bias
Variation in the approach speed or the angle of contact can lead to inconsistent results if the deflection is not properly managed. Excessive stylus deflection can introduce a systematic error that degrades the repeatability of the metrology system. Using high-stiffness materials like carbon fiber or tungsten carbide helps to minimize this effect in deep-bore inspections.
