Meaning
Protocol timer used in cellular internet of things networks defines the duration a device remains in active or connected mode before transitioning to power saving mode. The T3324 active timer begins running when a device finishes a data transfer and enters idle mode, during which it remains reachable for mobile-terminated services. It balances the need for device reachability against the desire to save power.
Operational Function
While this timer is active, the device monitors the paging channel for incoming messages or calls from the network. When the T3324 active timer expires, the device shuts down its radio receiver and enters power saving mode, where it can no longer be reached by the network. This state allows the device to minimize its energy consumption.
Network Negotiation
The value of this timer is requested by the device and approved by the network during the attach or tracking area update signaling sequence. In this negotiation, the network can adjust the requested value to align with its own paging and load-balancing requirements. This ensures that the device does not remain unreachable for longer than the application can tolerate, while also preventing the device from wasting power on continuous paging checks when no incoming data is expected.
Testing Method
Laboratory test benches use network emulators to verify that the device honors the negotiated value and transitions to the low-power state at the correct moment. Test instruments monitor the current drawn by the device to confirm the drop in power occurs precisely when the timer expires. This test ensures that the device implements the power-saving protocols correctly.
