Meaning
Electronic adjustment of a resonant circuit frequency by varying the capacitance of a semiconductor device through a controlled bias voltage. This varactor diode tuning allows for the precise control of local oscillators and filters in radio frequency systems without the use of moving parts. It provides the mechanism for frequency hopping and channel selection in modern wireless transceivers.
Diode Physics
The depletion region of a pn junction acts as a dielectric between two conductive plates. By increasing the reverse bias voltage, the width of this region expands and the capacitance decreases. This change in capacitance shifts the resonant frequency of the connected inductor and capacitor network.
High quality varactor diode tuning requires a stable and low noise voltage source to prevent unwanted frequency modulation.
Performance Metric
Linearity and tuning range determine the utility of the circuit. In varactor diode tuning, the ratio between the maximum and minimum capacitance sets the frequency limits of the system. The quality factor of the diode affects the phase noise of the oscillator.
High performance applications use multiple diodes in parallel or back to back configurations to improve the power handling and reduce distortion.
Module Integration
Digital to analog converters often provide the control signal for this process. This varactor diode tuning must be calibrated during production to account for component tolerances.
