Meaning
Integrated circuit that provides a highly accurate real-time clock with an internal temperature-compensated crystal oscillator. The ds3231 integrates a quartz crystal within its package to minimize external component count and reduce sensitivity to board-level noise. This device maintains precise timekeeping by actively compensating for temperature-induced frequency shifts across the entire industrial range.
Thermal Correction
Temperature sensors measure the heat of the die every 64 seconds. Logic within the ds3231 then adjusts the load capacitance of the integrated crystal to match the target frequency. This process ensures the clock remains accurate to within 2 parts per million in most environments.
High precision is maintained even when the system processor is in a sleep state.
Internal Register
Time and date information resides in a series of 8-bit registers accessible via a standard I2C interface. These registers track seconds, minutes, hours, day, date, month and year with leap year compensation. Dedicated registers also hold alarm settings and a control byte for the square-wave output.
Read and write operations occur through a single slave address assigned by the manufacturer.
Power Architecture
Dual power inputs allow the device to switch between a primary supply and a backup battery. An internal power-fail circuit monitors the voltage on the main pin to trigger an automatic switchover when the primary source drops below a threshold. Current draw in battery-only mode remains low to extend the life of small coin cells.
This ensures time data is preserved during system outages and long-term storage. The battery voltage can be monitored through the interface to predict the remaining life of the cell.
