Meaning
Standardized assessment of a device under test determines its ability to withstand sudden electrostatic discharges without functional degradation. This procedure, representing esd testing, evaluates the resilience of sensitive semiconductors and inputs against the voltage spikes that occur when humans touch equipment. An integration layer for smart products must withstand such discharges to ensure reliability in retail environments.
Laboratory engineers conduct these trials to satisfy international electromagnetic compatibility requirements before a product enters production.
Discharge Type
Simulating human contact involves both contact and air discharge methods. Contact discharge occurs when the simulator probe touches the conductive surface directly, ensuring a repeatable rise time. Air discharge handles insulated surfaces where the simulator approaches the target until a spark occurs.
Both methods are executed to ensure complete enclosure coverage.
Environmental Control
Control of temperature and humidity remains necessary to achieve consistent results during the test sequence. High humidity can dissipate static charges prematurely, causing the test generator to deliver lower energy than required. Testing facilities maintain low relative humidity to prevent this effect.
Verification of the ESD generator output is performed daily to ensure calibration compliance.
Compliance Threshold
Acceptance of the equipment under test requires that its internal circuit logic remains uncorrupted. A temporary screen flicker is allowed if it recovers without assistance. System resets are not permitted.
