Meaning
Specialized mechanical and electrical apparatuses are utilized on the assembly line to interface with a manufactured printed circuit board for functional validation. Employing factory test fixtures allows production teams to quickly establish temporary, reliable contact with specific test points on the board under test. These fixtures typically utilize spring loaded pogo pins that press against gold plated test pads.
This mechanical interface enables high throughput diagnostic runs without requiring permanent connectors to be populated.
Mechanical Interface
A custom milled bed of nails holds the board securely during the testing process to ensure correct pin alignment. The mechanical lever or pneumatic press applies uniform downward force, preventing damage to delicate components.
Electrical Measurement
The fixture routes the electrical connections to standard test instruments such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, and spectrum analyzers. This configuration allows automated software to measure voltage levels, check for electrical short circuits, and verify power consumption profiles. Any deviation from specified tolerances prompts the system to flag the board as defective.
Functional Verification
Programming of the initial bootloader and application firmware occurs directly through this interface before the final assembly steps. Once programmed, the board runs its built in self test routines while the fixture monitors the communication ports to verify functional integrity. This step confirms that the microcontrollers, sensors, and wireless radios operate correctly before the product is packaged.
