Meaning
Printed circuit board data transmission standards that append stackup, layer functions, and drill properties to copper image data simplify the manufacturing handoff. Developed to extend the traditional Gerber RS-274X format, the Gerber X2 specification adds automated attributes to the files, reducing manual intervention by the fabricator. This format includes embedded metadata that defines the role of each layer, such as solder mask, copper weight, and legend.
Using this standard minimizes communication errors between design engineers and board manufacturing facilities.
Data Automation
Fabrication tools parse the embedded metadata to configure the production line without manual layout mapping. Traditional Gerber files require a separate text file to describe the board stackup, which can lead to misinterpretation. With Gerber X2 specification data, the manufacturing software automatically recognizes which file represents the top copper layer and which represents the drill path.
This automation reduces pre-production setup times.
Solder Mask
Attribute tags in the files define critical features like solder mask openings, via plugging requirements, and surface finish areas. Fabricators use this information to program optical inspection systems and selective plating lines.
Error Reduction
Standardized attributes allow design rule checkers in CAD tools to verify the files for inconsistencies before they are exported. Missing layers or mismatched drill diameters are identified automatically, avoiding expensive production delays.
