Meaning
A Media Access Control sublayer attribute in IEEE 802.15.4 networks determines whether the receiver of a wireless device remains active during idle periods. Known as macRxOnWhenIdle, this boolean parameter governs the radio duty cycle and influences the overall power consumption profile of the node. Setting this parameter to true ensures the device is constantly ready to receive incoming frames without prior synchronization.
When set to false, the device disables its receiver during idle intervals to conserve battery power.
Power Budget
Battery-powered endpoints require strategic management of the radio transceiver state to prolong operational lifetimes. If macRxOnWhenIdle is enabled, the continuous receiver current draw can deplete a standard coin cell battery within days. Disabling the parameter allows the node to enter deep sleep states where current draw drops to microampere levels.
This setting is standard for sensor nodes that transmit occasionally.
Protocol Control
The network coordinator manages the transmission of queued messages based on the active state of individual child nodes.
Network Latency
Communication delays increase when the radio receiver must be activated before data reception can occur. When macRxOnWhenIdle is set to false, the parent node must buffer packets until the child node wakes up and requests them. This polling mechanism introduces latency but preserves power.
