Meaning
Hardware signal notifies the central processing unit that a specific data operation has finished or requires attention. The memory controller interrupt prevents the main processor from stalling while waiting for peripheral operations like flash programming. It allows the system to execute other tasks during hardware movement.
Scheduling Priority
The operating system kernel assigns a specific urgency to this signal to ensure that data buffers do not overflow. When a memory controller interrupt is received, the current execution thread is paused to allow the interrupt service routine to run. This routine typically clears a status flag and notifies the application that the requested data is now available in the local stack.
Signal Path
A physical line on the silicon connects the storage logic to the interrupt controller of the system on a chip. When the memory controller interrupt fires, the hardware automatically saves the current program counter. This mechanism ensures that the processor can return to its previous work without losing its state.
It is a fundamental part of the asynchronous input and output architecture. Hardware logic handles the transition.
Fault Detection
Communication failures or timeout conditions also trigger this signal. If a block fails to erase after the maximum number of attempts, the memory controller interrupt carries an error code to the driver. This prompt notification allows the firmware to implement a recovery strategy before the system hangs.
