Meaning
Publish-subscribe messaging protocols designed for constrained networks adapt standard queuing systems to work over user datagram protocol. Utilizing MQTT-SN, wireless nodes communicate with a gateway using simplified header structures and abbreviated topic identifiers. This architecture reduces both the payload size and the transport layer overhead compared to standard TCP-based broker systems.
Protocol Architecture
The protocol operates independently of the transport layer, allowing it to run over UDP, Zigbee or other packet-based wireless networks. A gateway translates these lightweight messages into standard TCP packets for the central broker.
Overhead Reduction
By replacing the two-byte topic strings of standard publish-subscribe systems with two-byte numeric topic identifiers, the protocol minimizes packet sizes. It also includes a sleep feature that allows the gateway to buffer messages for a sleeping node until it wakes. This capability prevents the server from dropping messages while the node remains in a deep sleep state to conserve battery power.
The reduction in handshake complexity and packet size significantly lowers the radio-on time of the connected node. This protocol is highly effective for large-scale utility monitoring where thousands of sensors send brief updates.
Network Implementation
Deploying this system requires installing a translation gateway close to the network edge or directly on the cellular gateway. This gateway manages the session states and handles the translation between UDP and TCP protocols.
