Meaning
Cellular authentication modules can store multiple international mobile subscriber identities to provide broader network coverage. A multi-IMSI SIM utilizes an onboard applet to select from a list of carrier profiles stored on the card. This capability allows the device to switch to a different cellular network when the primary carrier lacks coverage.
Identity Management
The SIM card’s secure microcontroller executes the selection algorithm independently of the host modem’s operating system. This autonomy ensures that the device can boot up and connect even in remote locations.
Network Redundancy
This technology is highly beneficial for mobile assets that travel across borders or operate in areas with spotty network coverage. If the active network signal drops below a defined threshold, the onboard applet detects the failure and selects an alternative profile. The modem then reboots its radio stack and attempts to register on the newly selected network.
This automatic transition prevents prolonged offline periods and reduces the need for manual on-site troubleshooting. In addition, it provides a fallback mechanism if a specific carrier experiences a major outage. This capability is important for applications like medical monitors or fleet trackers.
Switching Mechanism
Profile selection operates according to a prioritized list configured by the connectivity provider. This list can be updated over the air to adapt to changing network pricing or coverage quality.
