Meaning
Initial registration procedure between a cellular terminal and the core network establishes a communication link at the control plane level. During the nas attach, the terminal transmits its identity and security capabilities to the mobility management entity to authenticate itself and obtain an ip address. This process is necessary before any user plane data can be sent or received over the cellular network.
Protocol Sequence
The message exchange begins with an attach request sent from the terminal to the base station, which forwards it to the core network. After authentication, the network returns an attach accept message.
Network Registration
Security context establishment occurs concurrently with the registration to encrypt all subsequent control plane signaling. The cellular module uses the credentials stored on the secure element to generate the cryptographic keys required for the nas attach. Once the keys are verified, the network assigns a temporary identity to the device to protect its permanent identifier during future transactions.
Failure Mitigation
Firmware implementation must handle cases where the registration attempt is rejected by the network. When a reject cause is returned, the device must initiate a retry routine that complies with the timers specified by the cellular standards. If the nas attach fails repeatedly, the terminal should switch to a different frequency band or attempt to register with a different network operator if roaming is supported.
This logic prevents the terminal from flooding the network with unnecessary signaling requests.
