Meaning
Look up table contains a pre calculated set of phase and amplitude weights for every radiator in an antenna system to facilitate rapid beam steering. The phased array codebook allows the radio controller to select a specific beam direction instantly without calculating complex trigonometric functions in real time.
Steering Efficiency
Rapid switching between beam directions is necessary to maintain a stable link with a moving device or to switch between different base stations. By utilizing a phased array codebook, the system can hop between predefined beams in a matter of nanoseconds. This speed is critical for mitigating the effects of sudden signal blockage in millimeter wave environments.
The modem selects the index from the table that provides the strongest received signal strength.
Memory Optimization
Balancing the number of entries in the table against the available system memory is a major design consideration for mobile devices. A dense phased array codebook provides finer angular resolution and better gain but consumes more storage space in the firmware. Engineers often use interpolation techniques to derive intermediate beam directions from a smaller set of stored base patterns.
This strategy minimizes the memory footprint while maintaining acceptable steering precision.
System Calibration
Factory calibration validates that the physical beams generated by the hardware match the mathematical models stored in the firmware. During this phase, the phased array codebook is tuned to account for manufacturing variations in the phase shifters and the individual antenna elements. If the radiators are slightly mismatched, the codebook entries are adjusted to compensate for these offsets.
This ensures that every produced unit achieves the target gain and directionality specified in the product data sheet.
