Meaning
Collection of multiple light sensitive diodes arranged on a single substrate to capture spatial light distributions. A photodiode array converts incoming photons into electrical currents that can be processed by an analog front end. This configuration is used in proximity sensing and gesture recognition.
Each element in the grid provides a discrete data point for the overall measurement.
Component Architecture
Silicon fabrication techniques determine the pixel pitch and the spectral sensitivity of the sensors. The photodiode array is often integrated with multiplexers to reduce the number of output pins required on the package. This design allows a single processor to read data from dozens of sensors sequentially.
Small footprints are necessary for integration into wearable smart devices.
Interface Requirements
High speed data acquisition is needed to capture rapid changes in light intensity. Designers must manage the crosstalk between adjacent elements in the photodiode array to maintain signal integrity. Shielding and careful routing on the printed circuit board prevent electrical noise from corrupting the low level currents.
The choice of transimpedance amplifier affects the speed and resolution of the system.
Integration Challenge
Mechanical alignment of the array with external optics is a primary concern during assembly. The photodiode array must be positioned precisely behind the lens to avoid vignetting or focal errors. Automated pick and place machines ensure that the component sits correctly within its designated enclosure.
Proper housing prevents stray light from interfering with the measurement accuracy.
