Meaning
Designated time intervals in a LoRaWAN Class B schedule allow the network server to initiate downlink communication with an end device. A ping slot defines the exact moment a device opens its radio receiver to listen for messages from a gateway. This mechanism applies only to devices synchronized with a periodic beacon.
Beacon Alignment
Synchronization between the gateway and the device ensures the timing remains accurate. Because the ping slot is calculated from a common time source, the device does not need to keep its receiver active between intervals. Clocks must be regularly adjusted to prevent drift.
Power Requirement
Battery consumption increases with the frequency of reception windows. A short interval for the ping slot enables faster downlink communication but reduces the total operational life of the device. Engineers balance the need for low latency against the energy budget of the hardware.
Reception Window
Opening the receiver involves a specific sequence of power-up and tuning steps. If the ping slot is missed due to interference, the device waits until the next scheduled interval to attempt reception. Data stays in the gateway buffer until a successful handshake occurs.
This periodic check allows the network to send commands without the device initiating the contact.
