Meaning
Thermosetting polymer resin used to encase electronic assemblies to protect them from environmental stressors such as moisture, shock, chemical exposure and vibration. Utilizing potting epoxy creates a barrier against water ingress and high humidity that could otherwise cause short circuits. The material also provides structural support to prevent the movement of large components during operation.
Environmental Protection
Sealed enclosures rely on the chemical properties of the resin to block the movement of corrosive gases and liquids. Once the potting epoxy cures, it forms a permanent shield that cannot be removed without damaging the underlying electronics. This level of protection is standard for devices used in outdoor or automotive applications where exposure to road salt or rain is expected.
The hardness of the material also prevents unauthorized access to the internal circuit board design.
Thermal Management
Formulation of the resin often includes fillers that help move heat away from the internal circuit boards. By choosing a potting epoxy with high thermal conductivity, designers can manage the temperature of power regulators and processors effectively.
Curing Cycle
Transformation from a liquid to a solid state occurs over a specific time period and often requires the application of heat. The potting epoxy must be mixed in the correct ratio of resin to hardener to ensure it reaches its full strength and chemical resistance. Any deviation from the recommended temperature during the cure cycle can result in bubbles or cracks in the finished product.
