Meaning
Downlink messages sent by the base station in response to a preamble transmission allow the terminal to proceed with connection setup. This Random Access Response is transmitted on the physical downlink shared channel during a designated time window that begins shortly after the preamble transmission. It contains a timing advance command to correct the device’s uplink transmission timing and allocates an initial uplink grant.
The message also assigns a temporary identity used for subsequent communication.
Downlink Allocation
Scheduling parameters for the response are carried on the downlink control channel using a dedicated identifier. The Random Access Response message is sent dynamically and can address multiple preambles simultaneously. It contains the specific resource blocks where the device must transmit its next message.
Timing Advance
Distance between the base station and the mobile device introduces a propagation delay that must be compensated to avoid slot overlap. In the Random Access Response, the timing advance value tells the device how much earlier it must transmit its uplink signals. This adjustment ensures that the uplink burst arrives at the receiver precisely aligned with the network’s time slots.
Reception Failure
Missing the scheduled window requires the terminal to restart the preamble transmission process from the beginning. If the device does not receive the Random Access Response within the preconfigured duration, it assumes a collision or signal block occurred. The module then increases its transmission power and retries the access procedure.
