Meaning
A high-frequency electrical measurement defines the reverse transmission coefficient from the output port to the input port of a multi-port electrical network. Radio frequency engineers use s12 scattering parameters to evaluate the isolation performance of amplifiers, filters, and transceivers in wireless modules. This value indicates how much of the signal applied to the output port leaks back to the input port.
A low reverse transmission value prevents unwanted feedback and maintains circuit stability in dense communication devices.
Measurement Method
Measuring these values requires a vector network analyzer connected to the ports of the device under test. The instrument applies a known signal to the output port while measuring the resulting signal level at the input port, with all other ports terminated in their characteristic impedance. This calibration prevents reflections from distorting the measured isolation values.
RF Isolation
High isolation is essential for preventing the output of a power amplifier from destabilizing the sensitive receiver stage. Evaluating s12 scattering parameters helps designers identify weak shielding or poor layout practices that lead to crosstalk. This test confirms that the physical separation of signal lines on the printed circuit board is adequate.
Device Characterization
Accurate isolation measurements ensure that the wireless product passes regulatory electromagnetic compatibility standards.
