Meaning
Low power clock modules provide the timing necessary to wake a system from a dormant state. The sleep timer operates independently of the high speed system clock to maintain timekeeping while the main processor is powered down. This component is the fundamental gatekeeper for duty cycled operations in autonomous devices.
Oscillator Selection
Accuracy and current draw are the primary factors when choosing a timing source for the inactive period. A sleep timer often relies on a 32.768 kilohertz crystal or an internal low power oscillator. While internal oscillators consume less power, they are more susceptible to temperature changes than external quartz crystals.
Wakeup Logic
Programmable registers allow the software to define the exact duration of the sleep interval. Once the sleep timer reaches the specified value, it generates an interrupt that restores power to the core and peripherals. This hardware based mechanism ensures the device returns to an active state without any external trigger, allowing for autonomous operation in remote locations for extended periods of time.
Power Budget
Constant operation of this timer represents the baseline energy floor for a disconnected device. Because the sleep timer is never turned off, its power consumption must be in the nanoampere range. Minimizing the leakage current in the timer circuitry is a primary focus for semiconductor manufacturers.
