Meaning
Linear opening in a metal housing that acts as an unintentional radiator of high frequency energy when its length approaches half a wavelength. A slot aperture compromises the electromagnetic containment of a module by allowing fields to pass through gaps in the assembly or around unsealed display windows. It functions essentially like an unplanned antenna.
Radiation Leakage
Emission levels peak when the orientation of the current flow on the metal surface is perpendicular to the long axis of the gap. Even a tiny slot aperture can allow significant noise to exit an enclosure if the frequency inside is high enough to pass through the specific geometry. Sealing these gaps is a primary goal during shield verification.
Frequency Sensitivity
Reduction of this leakage happens by ensuring that any unavoidable gaps remain small relative to the highest frequency present in the system. Because the slot aperture is a physical length, it only becomes transparent to radio waves at certain predictable points in the spectrum. Designers split one long gap into several smaller holes to reduce emission power.
Physical Geometry
Shape of the structural hole determines exactly how much energy is coupled into space during high power transmission states.
