Meaning
Unwanted electromagnetic interference arises from high-speed digital switching on the System Power Management Interface of a mobile platform. This disturbance, known as spmi bus noise, spreads through adjacent circuit traces when the digital clock and data lines change states. It couples into sensitive radio receiver circuits and deteriorates the overall signal to noise ratio.
The effect is limited by the distance between the power management traces and the antenna feed, requiring careful board separation during the physical layout phase.
Signal Degradation
Wireless receivers are highly sensitive to electrical noise generated by nearby digital buses. When spmi bus noise is present, it can elevate the receiver noise floor and decrease the sensitivity of the cellular modem. This decrease reduces the effective range of the wireless device.
Hardware Mitigation
Careful circuit board routing keeps high-speed digital pathways away from sensitive radio components. To reduce spmi bus noise, designers route these digital lines as stripline traces sandwiched between continuous ground planes. This layout blocks the radiated electric field from reaching the receiver circuits.
Digital shield runs are essential.
System Evaluation
Engineers measure the spurious emission levels on the power supply lines during peak data transfer. This test of spmi bus noise is performed using a high-frequency spectrum analyzer to verify that clock harmonics do not overlap with the active radio bands. This analysis helps maintain optimal wireless performance.
Signal clarity is maintained.
