Meaning
Connection tracking mechanisms in network gateways manage the lifecycle of stateless communication channels. The UDP socket teardown occurs when a firewall or network address translation gateway removes the routing entry for a user datagram protocol session after a period of inactivity. This process is necessary because UDP does not have explicit connection termination signals like TCP.
Socket Release
Gateways use these timeouts to reclaim routing table entries and IP addresses from inactive sessions. Once the entry is removed, any incoming packets from the server are discarded.
Network Timeout
Because UDP is a connectionless protocol, the gateway has no way of knowing when a session has ended other than by monitoring traffic. If a device stops transmitting for longer than the gateway’s timeout limit, the route is silently closed. This behavior requires the device to send periodic keepalive packets if it needs to receive unsolicited data from the server.
However, sending keepalives increases both data usage and battery consumption. If the keepalive interval is too long, the socket is torn down, and the device becomes unreachable from the cloud. Developers must balance these factors when designing the communication schedule.
Application Design
To ensure reliable communication, application-level acknowledgments and dynamic keepalive algorithms are used to maintain the gateway routing state. This approach helps keep the communication path open without wasting battery power on unnecessary transmissions.
