Meaning
Transmission packets of a defined structure constitute the standard format for exchanging information between a smart card and a host application processor. This byte-oriented container, known as an APDU, enables command-response communication over physical interfaces. It delivers instruction bytes from the terminal and returns status words from the secure element.
Structure Division
Header and body elements compose the primary segments of the command packet. The card reader transmits a command APDU containing a class byte and an instruction byte alongside two parameter bytes. Optional fields specify the exact length of the command payload or the expected response bytes.
Responses consist of an optional data field followed by two mandatory status bytes that indicate the execution result. A failure in the byte alignment or incorrect length indication causes immediate rejection by the secure element.
Interface Validation
Verification of correct data exchange occurs during compliance testing of the secure element. Mobile integration requires precise format verification of every APDU exchanged during network authentication.
Error Mitigation
Protocol analyzers capture transmission errors at the physical interface layer. The host software must handle unexpected APDU responses to prevent baseband resets. Standard fallback routines retry the transaction or reset the smart card interface to restore a known operational state.
